Between 2005 and 2015, Grant Mackay embarked on several adventures into the deepest and most remote corners to record exclusively Canadian wilderness and nature sounds using his field recorder and microphones. Throughout those years, his travels had taken him to some of the farthest reaches of wilderness in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
Grant Mackay’s 2023 re-mastered, “LAKESIDE SAVANNAH (DELUXE EDITION),” is a tour-de-force of nature that sounds audio realism. It captures the day and nighttime bird and wildlife sounds of various environments from the Point Petre Nature Preserve, a remote wilderness located on the southernmost tip of the island of Prince Edward County in Ontario.
In this recording, you can listen to the wave sounds from the limestone rock shores on its western reaches; the midnight sounds of crickets, peeper frogs, and aquatic birds of its interior blue heron rookery; and the sounds of kingfishers, terns, and seagulls that inhabit the southern shores of its gull bar.

“The clarity, detail, and sense of distance of these recordings are stunning. Of all the environmental soundscapes I’ve heard, this is one of the more “I feel like I am actually there” ones. And the packaging is superb as always! Thanks again, it’s absolutely wonderful!”
-Tim Clement, Composer.
“…the clarity of the recordings is superb… It resonates with me…” -Rob Stimpson, Wilderness Photographer, Rob Stimpson Photography
“The Savannah disc is crisp and clear as if nature were itself in the living room.” -Beck H., Music Aficionado.
“You can feel the power of the waves as they crash upon the shore…I love the frog sounds…the sound is so clear…sparkling!”
– Ann B., Bass Guitarist and Fellow Musician
The location for this recording was discovered by accident. Grant Mackay happened upon a forested marsh deep in a hidden valley among the rolling, pastoral farmland hills while driving the “dangerous and unmaintained” roads of Northumberland County in his 4WD. He was immediately struck by how such a wild place, not far from his country home in the village of Camborne, could be so close and yet be within our midst.
